Annual MT Cultural Camp 2010

The Mother Tongue Cultural Camp is a yearly event that the department organizes for our P3 pupils. The 2-day camp provides our pupils with the opportunity to learn and appreciate the different cultures practised by the Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnic groups in Singapore. Our pupils are exposed to meaningful and interesting activities such as Chinese Opera mask painting, bean portrait, kolam making, henna painting, batik painting, bunga manggar making and many more.

Conversational Chinese / Malay Language Programme 2010

The Conversational Chinese/Malay Programme (CCM) was introduced as an enrichment programme for non-Chinese/non-Malay pupils who are interested in learning a 3rd language and its culture. Learning Conversational Chinese/Malay would provide these pupils with the facility to communicate with their counterparts, to better understand and appreciate Chinese/Malay culture and values. It will also help pupils enhance their rapport with friends of the other race. As learning a 3rd language is an on-going process, we have the Beginner class for the P3s and the Basic class for the P4s who had gone through the beginner module while they were in P3. Feedback from pupils is that they have enjoyed the class and hopes to continue learning the 3rd language when they go to a secondary school.

Reading Mum Programme 2010 (Term 2 – 4)

Parents from the PIE Club cooperate with the Malay Department with much success. They play a major role in assisting the progress of identified pupils in primary one, two and the foundation streams. These parents identified as ‘Reading Mums’ teach pupils every Monday/Tuesday to speak, spell, read and write in Malay. Pupils who have attended these classes are observed to have improved significantly in their class assessments.

Annual Learning Journey 2010

Learning Journey to places of heritage in Singapore is a yearly event for the P6 pupils as a post-PSLE activity. In 2010, pupils visited the Tea Chapter and Kampong Glam to better understand and appreciate both the Chinese and Malay cultures. Pupils were educated on the origins of tea and had hands-on experience on tea making. On their visit to the Malay Heritage Museum, pupils were exposed to the history and cultures of our ethnic Malay group in Singapore. Apart from appreciating the exhibits, pupils gained a better insight of the Malay culture in Singapore.

Learning Journey

P4 pupils had the opportunity to go to Bukit Chandu (Reflections Hill) and the boardwalk to Kent Ridge Park in 2010. It was a memorable trip for the pupils as they were exposed to the history related to Bukit Chandu and Lieutenant Adnan. Participating pupils gained a very informative and meaningful lesson from this experience. They viewed exhibits, went into the experiential theatre and also did a reflection on the whole experience.

Incorperating ICT into Learning 2010.

Being computer literate is essential to our pupils as part of their holistic learning experience. Therefore, our pupils are widely exposed to activities and assignments that involve the use of ICT. Software such as Inspiration and Malay educational websites (Lead.com, & tinta.edumall.sg) are frequently used to complete assignments especially during E-Learning days. Apart from that, pupils also have hands-on experience in recording their voices during oral practices which are then uploaded to the Malay blog.

Pupils are also trained to do presentations at the various levels on topics taught in the syllabus. Such presentations allow pupils to flaunt their ICT skills and speaking ability in front of their peers. Both teachers and peers evaluate these presentations.

School Immersion by Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Bintang Utama 2010

2010 was an eventful year for the department. 33 pupils and 8 teachers from SK Seri Bintang Utama (SKSBU), Cheras, KL visited Changkat. Malay pupils had the opportunity to interact with the visitors. Prior to this, p4 pupils of both schools had actually interacted online through Lead.com (chat). SKSBU presented us with their ‘One Malaysia’ performance. The winners of the Malay Competitions also had the opportunity to showcase their talents.
